Feeling Empty? Life Lessons From the Empty Tomb

Have you ever stood in a place that felt strangely hollow, devoid of life or joy? Maybe it was a physical space, a once-vibrant room that now echoed with emptiness. Or perhaps it was an internal emptiness, a gnawing feeling that nothing mattered anymore.

One of the significant portions of the Easter story is what happened at the tomb. Sealed with a heavy stone, this tomb became a symbol of despair for the disciples of Christ. But three days later, the tomb was found empty and in that emptiness, an unshakeable lesson – that emptiness can be the prelude to a new beginning.

While Easter celebrates renewal and hope, the reality is that many of us experience emptiness in our daily lives. It can creep in after a loss, the end of a relationship, or a persistent feeling that we’re going through the motions but not truly living. This emptiness can be all-encompassing, leaving us questioning our purpose and wondering if there’s anything left to fight for.

Feeling Empty? I Know How it Feels

I can personally relate to that feeling. For a while, I found myself stuck in a job that felt like a slow drain on my soul.  Every day felt the same, the tasks monotonous, and the sense of accomplishment negligible.  Work became my anchor, not because it was fulfilling, but because it provided a paycheck and a semblance of structure.  Yet, beneath the surface, there was a hollowness that no amount of busyness could fill.

It took a lot of courage, but eventually, I decided to walk away.  It wasn’t an easy choice, but I knew I couldn’t prioritize a paycheck over my peace of mind.  Leaving that job was a turning point.  It forced me to re-evaluate what truly mattered in life and opened the door to new possibilities.

Finding Your New Beginning

The empty tomb wasn’t just the absence of something, it represented the potential for something new.  It symbolized the chance to rewrite the story, rise above the ashes, and create a meaningful future. So, if you’re feeling empty right now, know this: It doesn’t have to be the end of your story. It can be the beginning of a powerful transformation.

So how do you transition from feeling empty to experiencing the new beginning?

  • Embrace the Reflection: Emptiness can be a catalyst for deep introspection. Ask yourself the hard questions during crisis moments. What are my true values? What gives my life meaning and purpose? Don’t shy away from difficult emotions. Journaling, meditation, or talking to a trusted friend can help illuminate the answers.
  • Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Growth often lies on the other side of fear. Explore new paths – a passion project you’ve shelved, a skill you always wanted to learn, volunteering for a cause that inspires you. Even small steps can open up unexpected possibilities.
  • Consider the Role of Faith: The intelligent design of the world is enough reason to believe in the existence of a creator. And for many, exploring faith is a path to finding deeper meaning and connection. And it can be yours if you will keep an open mind.
  • Build Your Support System: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your potential. Seek out those who uplift, inspire, and offer support during challenging times.
  • Reach Out for Help: If emptiness feels overwhelming or you’re struggling to cope, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. A therapist can provide tools, guidance, and a safe space to process your emotions and develop a path toward healing and self-discovery.

  1. I guess the emptiness part struck a cord. It is not that easy to embrace hard truths. Maybe we can start from a hand shake, yea?
